How to Clean and Maintain Plantation Shutters

October 8, 2026 5 min read Care & Maintenance

Plantation shutters are simple to look after. A light, regular clean keeps the louvres and frames looking their best, while a few sensible habits protect the finish and moving parts for years to come.

Weekly Dusting

Close the louvres and use a soft microfibre cloth or a feather duster to remove surface dust. Then tilt the louvres in the opposite direction and repeat. This is usually all that is needed for routine cleaning.

Cleaning Marks and Splashes

For fingerprints or light marks, use a clean cloth that is only slightly damp and wipe gently. Avoid harsh cleaners, abrasive pads and excessive water, particularly on timber finishes. Dry the surface afterwards with a soft cloth.

Bathrooms and Kitchens

Waterproof ABS polymer shutters are a practical option for humid rooms. Good ventilation and wiping away condensation will help any window treatment perform well. During a survey, we can recommend the right material for kitchens, bathrooms and other high-moisture spaces.

Looking After Hinges and Panels

Operate panels and louvres gently and keep the surrounding window area clear so nothing catches when shutters open. If something feels stiff, misaligned or damaged, contact the fitting team rather than forcing it. Shutters by Balaz provides a minimum 5-year warranty on every installation.
